Service Learning Courses
The following courses include a community service component:
B104 Power Up: Strategies for Academic Success
Requires 15 hours of service at a community agency. Experiences offer students opportunities to learn about community resources, health disparities, advocacy, and the role of the professional nurse.
B233 Health and Wellness
Students actively assist with community-based programs that focus on health promotion or disease prevention such as health fairs, screening activities, and health education programs.
S473 A Multi-System Approach to the Health of the Community
Students apply concepts of community health nursing through service to local agencies that address population health needs such as homeless shelters, neighborhood centers, and schools.
S473 Multi-System Approach to the Health of the Community: Globally Focused Practice
Course focuses on health issues of immigrant and international populations. Students apply community health nursing concepts through service to local immigrant groups or through service when traveling abroad with an IUPUI-sponsored service-learning trip.
Z490/Z492 Individual/Clinical Study in Nursing: Summer of Service and Language Immersion in Cuernavaca, Mexico
Students spend four weeks at a language school in Mexico. Participants volunteer twice each week at local schools, hospitals, orphanages, and community centers.
H540 Community Assessment
Students carry out a community assessment and share results with local stakeholders.
H548 Community-Based Nursing
Working with local agencies students develop and evaluate programs that address community-identified health needs.
L579 Nursing Administration
Students conduct projects such as analyzing the security of a pediatric critical care unit and developing clinical benchmarks for local health care organizations.
G553 Women, Health, and Culture
Through case study, research, and review of related literature, students examine the impact of culture on the health of women and their families.
