Developing Your Skills as a Clinical Nurse Specialist Preceptor will acquaint you with the role of clinical preceptor, working with faculty and graduate students at a school of nursing.  This course is based on a preceptor model in which the student, faculty, and preceptor work together to facilitate student acquisition of course competencies. The self-paced format allows you to enroll and proceed through the content on your own schedule and is designed to be completed without instructor facilitation or discussion. The course is composed of several modules and a multiple choice post-test.

You will:

  1. Describe the responsibilities of a clinical nurse specialist preceptor.
  2. Describe strategies to facilitate graduate student learning in a clinical setting.
  3. Describe characteristics of an adult learner. 
  4. Describe the principles of clinical evaluation for determining mastery of course competencies.

Q: Should I take this course if I’m a new CNS?  How much experience do I need as a CNS before becoming a CNS student preceptor?
A: This course will help you understand what is involved in becoming a preceptor.  After taking this course you will be better prepared to decide if you are ready to become a CNS student preceptor.
Q: I’m an experienced CNS student preceptor.  Should I take this course?
A: Experienced CNS preceptors may find this course helpful.  It includes fundamental principles along with some suggestions for working with various types of student learners.  Validate your knowledge and pick up some new tips and ideas!
Q: Will this course meet CNE credit required for maintaining my CNS certification?
A: This course is approved for contact hours by IU School of Nursing Office of Lifelong Learning. The Office of Lifelong Learning is accredited by ANCC as a provider of continuing nursing education. Check with your certification board for specific continuing education requirements.
Course Components

Each module contains discrete topics related to precepting.  Learning activities throughout the course provide opportunities to apply concepts learned or to expand knowledge in selected topics.  Suggested readings are provided.

Course Information

This course is recommended for Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) interested in becoming a CNS student preceptor or for CNSs looking for ideas to update or expand preceptor knowledge and skill.  Faculty teaching in CNS programs and supervising CNS student clinical experiences may be interested in recommending the course to CNS preceptors.

You must complete the post-test with a score of 80 percent or greater and the course evaluation to receive the contact hours for the course. The contact hour record will be sent to you at the personal/professional e-mail account that you specify on your registration for this course.
