Critical Care Courses Preceptor Information
The preceptor-learner relationship is a 1:1 relationship. Selection of preceptors will be based on the “best fit” between the learner’s goals and the needs, and the preceptor’s skills, area of expertise, and work shift(s). Preceptors should meet the specified qualifications the organization and Indiana University School of Nursing to include: current RN license; BSN in nursing; minimum of 3 years in the clinical practice area; prefer past preceptor experience.
Academic students taking the clinical practicum for academic credit will work with the faculty to arrange for the clinical practicum hours.
Course participants registering for the clinical practicum for contact hours are responsible for arranging their own clinical practicum experiences. Before participants can begin the practicum, an agreement must be signed with the organization providing the preceptor and the access to the care of patients.
If you reside outside of Indiana, access to the course is contingent upon the signing of an agreement with the organization providing the clinical practicum. Registration and clinical site location should be done at least four months prior to the start of your selected course session.
Clinical practicum hours will be arranged with the preceptor; therefore the shift time and dates will vary with each participant. To receive a professional certificate both the 112 clinical hours and the online didactic course must be successfully completed.
To participate in the clinical practicum you must be a registered nurse and provide a copy of your current license to practice nursing in the state in which the practicum will be held. You must also provide documentation of the following:
- Current CPR certification
- Completion of an educational program on bloodborne pathogens (OSHA)
- Negative TB test or chest xray within the past 30 days
- Immunization Record form
- Professional liability insurance
Each preceptor must complete the Preceptor Online course prior to the start of the critical care course, because it prepares preceptors to precept learners enrolled in the course.
Upon successful completion of the free Preceptor Online course, preceptors will receive 5.75 contact hours and a contact hour record.
