Getting Started as a Staff Educator

Make a confident transition from clinician or faculty member into a role in staff development. Learn about concepts, strategies, and tools that work in all clinical disciplines, presented in a nursing professional development framework. You will discover useful, practical information, whether you'll be taking responsibility for staff development in a department, a clinic or other health care facility, or an academic setting.
You will:

  • Give examples of appropriate activities to illustrate the six component roles of the staff educator: educator, facilitator, change agent, consultant, leader, researcher.
  • Describe effective techniques for assessing learning needs of staff members.
  • Construct an effective plan to meet learning needs of staff members.
  • Identify issues and strategies in implementing learning sessions in a clinical setting.
  • Create a sound plan for evaluating staff learning considering process, content, and outcome evaluation.
Required Computer Skills

You should have basic computing skills including word processing and navigating the Web. For additional information, see the basic computer and software requirements.

How You will be Evaluated

You must enter and participate in the course no later than five days after the course begins. All required assignments and the course evaluation must be completed by the course end date to receive a contact hour record.

Costs and Fees

Only one discount will apply.

Refund Policy 

The registration fee less a $60 administrative fee is refundable according to the refund schedule below.

  • 100 percent refundable through the last day of the first full week of the course minus the $60 administrative fee.
  • 50 percent refundable through the last day of the second full week of the course minus the $60 administrative fee.
Transfer Fee

Beginning January 1, 2007, a transfer fee in the amount of 10 percent of the amount paid will apply when a request to transfer from the currently scheduled course to the next scheduled course is received and approved.  

The refund policy will still apply if participant later decides to drop the course.

The transfer fee and refund policies apply to individuals and groups taking the course for continuing nursing education.

The Indiana University School of Nursing Office of Lifelong Learning is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission of Accreditation.
