Teaching and Learning in Web-based Courses Professional Certificate Program
Four courses, to be taken in sequence
Cost: $1,000 (for all four courses); $950 for NLN members
You must complete all four courses in sequence in order to receive a certificate. You must be familiar with using a learning management system such as Blackboard, Web CT, or Oncourse, in order to complete the certificate program.
You will be required to create a Web page in both Course 2 and Course 4. If you are not familiar with basic HTML Web coding, we recommend that you use a visual HTML editor such as Microsoft FrontPage, Macromedia Dreamweaver, or NVU. If you do not have an HTML editor installed on your computer, you can download NVU for free.
Course 1: Getting Started: An Introduction to Choosing and Using Web Course Management Software
Learn about and practice using a course management software program. Learning activities include practice chats, development of a personal profile, and a scavenger hunt to locate technology tools and support services at your location. You’ll experience being an online learner and a teacher who’s tuned in to technology, at the same time.
Requires 8-10 hours for review of course content and completion of designated activities. This class is a prerequisite for all other courses in the program.
Course 2: Designing Web Pages for Web Courses
Develop two simple Web pages using a visual HTML editor, learn about contexts in which various Web education tools are used, assess institutional infrastructure and factors impacting Web course development, and implement effective Web and instructional design in this overview of Web-based course design for academic and health care settings. Prerequisite: completion of Course 1.
Course 3: Teaching and Evaluation: Strategies for Web-Based Courses
Learn how to use threaded discussion boards, chat rooms, learner assessment surveys, multimedia tools, and interactive teaching strategies. Requires approximately 20 hours for interaction with course content and materials and participation in discussion and chat work groups. Prerequisite: completion of Courses 1 and 2.
Course 4: Practicum: The Development of a Web-Based Course
The practicum is the culmination of the certificate program. Faculty will review and critique the Web learning module or segment you developed during the first three courses of the program. Class size is limited to 30. The first three courses must be completed before enrolling in the Practicum.
