Professional Development
Rx PRN workshops provide instruction in topics of interest to IUSON faculty and staff including teaching and learning strategies, instructional technologies, and computing. Small group sizes allow for personalized attention and plenty of time for questions and answers.
Workshops scheduled in NU 222 are recorded for later access or review unless otherwise noted. Request access to workshop archives.
Tests & Surveys
Writing questions is just one part of the test-development process. Authors also need to know the interface, what settings mean, and how to grade and offer feedback. This tool offers flexibility for all of these functions.
Because this is a new tool, unfamiliar to many, the workshops will be offered in a slightly different method than other Rx: PRN workshops. We will offer the "total workshop" in multiple parts: (a) Test Creation: The Essentials; (b) Settings: Delivering an Assessment; (c) Settings: Gradebook/Feedback; and (d) Next Steps: Pools & Assessment Types.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
- You are strongly encouraged to attend the workshops in sequence, although it is not strictly required.
- There will be a single handout to cover all of the Test and Survey workshops. It is organized with links to IT Training's "Least You Need to Know" documentation for each major point to be covered. During the workshop, it will be assumed that you have read through the Least You Need to Know documents.
- The workshops will cover additional information not provided in the Least You Need to Know documents, but will not spend considerable time in repeating information covered in the linked documents. We will answer questions and offer clarification as needed by workshop participants in conjunction with demonstrations.
HANDOUT AVAILABLE. Whether or not you decide to attend a workshop, the handout emphasizes important points not included in other available documentation and will be a useful resource as you work in Tests & Surveys.
Test Creation: the Essentials
Wednesday, May 23, 11 a.m.–12 p.m.
WHERE: NU 222
PRESENTER: Cindy Hollingsworth
The workshop will provide an overview of the Tests & Surveys tool including available functionality; creating an assessment; creating questions and available question options; recommendations for working with images; publishing an assessment; and tips for students taking assessments.
Settings: Delivering an Assessment
Wednesday, June 6, 1–2 p.m.
WHERE: NU 222
PRESENTER: Cindy Hollingsworth
Settings are a critical component of the Tests & Surveys tool, and the number of options and how they are interrelated can become confusing. The workshop will give you information on each of the available Settings except Grading and Feedback. We will discuss important considerations regarding assessment organization, setting dates, and auto-submissions. NOTE: If you attend only two workshops this semester, this and the Gradebook/Feedback workshop should be your two choices!
Settings: Gradebook & Feedback
Friday, May 11, 12 noon–1 p.m.
WHERE: NU 222
PRESENTER: Cindy Hollingsworth
Grading and Feedback are two sections of the Test & Survey Settings that have proven to be among the functions that generate the most questions among authors in this new tool. We will discuss the difference between grades, scores, and feedback as well as information about settings options and how they react alone and in conjunction with one another. If you attend no other test tool workshop this semester, this is the one you should choose!
Taking the Next Steps: Pools & Assessment Types
WHEN:
Thursday, June 28, 12 noon–1 p.m.
(session will be recorded)
OR
Tuesday, July 17, 1:30–2:30 p.m.
WHERE: NU 222
PRESENTER: Cindy Hollingsworth
Now that you're comfortable with Test & Survey fundamentals, come to this workshop to explore how to use pools and create new assessment types. Pools allow you to re-use questions easily, or to deliver assessments with questions randomized from a larger question bank. Assessment Types allow you to build "assessment templates" with your preferred settings options.
Outlook: Calendar
